Can an automatic be over-reved?

I was wondering if a BMW with automatic transmission can be over-reved? Since an automatic does not have the "money shift" problem, the only thing I can think of that is remotely similar to the "money shift" is that you accidently shift to neutral while you're accelerating. (By the way, it's not that hard to move the gear from D to N; not tight at all.) However, since the car is not engaged, the only thing which drives the engine is its fuel supply as in contrast to the speed of the car itself in the case of "money shift"; and, as per BMW manual, the fuel supply is automatically cut if the engine is approaching the red zone. What do you guys think?

that is correct. the fuel supply stops when a certain line is reached. when in neutral you can´t overrev. i don´t know if you can move the lever to 1st or 2nd gear when you are already at high speed. with the steptronic you can try to select a lower gear but the electronics do not allow the change when it revs the engine too high.

He's saying that the torque converter is only meant to transfer power from the engine to the transmission but the torque converter is not meant to transfer power from the transmission to the engine. So even if the transmission is spinning fast enough to overrev the engine by some freak occurance it wouldn't even transfer all that power to the engine.

ah yes thanks

It does do a pretty decent job at it though. I wouldn't recommend this but it you are driving down the street and pop it in reverse, it stalls out the engine. Then again thats the other direction, which is a whole different story. Since its the other direction, it has significant influence on the engine from the tranny. Least a geo prism will hehe. Thats another story.

you actually tried to put it in R while driving? heck i wouldn´t have the guts to try it out. just imagine what could happen.....uuaaahh....with new trannys you can´t do that stunt any way can you? electronics should block it.

What would happen if you put it from neutral to D when the engine revs pretty high then?

it was a 92 geo prism. man i hated that car. When i was younger my brother and I were driving down the road doing 50 MPH, (speed limit 55), he went to give me a charlie horse and i went to block it and somehow knocked the botton and it went into R. It just went bam, stalled out, i pulled over and it started right up. I couldn't believe it. Wish it would have died though haha.

I don't know if electronics would stop it, most shifters are connected directly to the tranny. Couldn't tell you what happens in an automatic tranny though.

You just rip tire like mad. Its really not good for your poor tranny though. I did that all the time in my 88 camery. Wished i had a manuel. (didn't car if that one died either.) Got pulled over for it once. wreckless driving, but i fought it. Got failure to follow all traffic laws or some crap which took off the points. 100 bucks.

On an automatic E46, the car will not let you shift from neutral to the drive gear when you're revving the engine at a standstill. You would have to step on the brake first before the car lets you shift to drive. This is just a saftey mechanism to protect your transmission.

You can't do a neutral drop on a BMW, I tried it with a loaner car, lol, but you can go reverse than hit it into drive and punch it, you burnout mad long, but I would never do that to my car.

That is exactly how my friend used to do burnouts in his family's BMW company car (E36 318i automatic). That is, until one time he sheared all of the teeth off of the ring gear in the differential. I was in the car at the time. Going backwards, pop into drive, floor it, BAM! CRUNCH!, engine hits rev limiter, car keeps moving backward.

You can rev to the point of the limiter (very high) with some quick foot hand coordintaion hit the brake then slam the shift into drive. It is easily done yet completely ill advised.[nono]

How about drive to reverse? While stopped at a traffic signal I heard a loud BANG then screeching wheels. I watched a Toyota Tercel traveling forward begin to hop backward. Driver panicked, must have hit gas instead of brake or clutch... rubber was screamming... white smoke all around within 4 ~ 6 secs the event was over. So was the Tercel. I have heard some refer to this as a "money shift".

Note: Only the Tercel and the drivers ego were injured.[thumb]
