Can I add a sub on a stock sound system?

I'd like to enhance the sound of my stock stereo with a sub woofer if possible. But not with anything that will shake the car next to you, or something that will take over my entire trunk space. Got a budget of $500. Any suggestion?

i´d say the stock system has not enough power to run a sub, but with a lil amplifier it should work. how about those active subs? no need of a seperate amp as they have their own onboard and just to be powered from the battery. how are those?

The stock system should have enough power, but you have a budget of $500, so just go for a 100-watt amplifier as well. It's always recommended to independantly power the aftermarket sub-woofer(s) in your car.

for real? then they have really made a step forward. the stock unit in my car was not capable to get a nice sound out of the stock speakers....[rolleyes]

the replacement makes a fairly nice sound, even with some bass, still using the stock speakers.
