Hey guys.

I just got into an accident and my insurance company politely informed me that I do not have any collision coverage (lesson learned...), so I have to take care of the body work myself. I went to my dealer for the damage estimates and they gave me a total of $2000. [target]
I do not see that as being a realistic price for that amount of damage.
How much do you think I will be charged if I decide to go with some local repair shops (ny/nj)?

Sorry about that :-( Fixing any car nowadays is really expensive. After looking at that picture, I think $2000.00 is about what a BMW repair center would ask (not that I agree it should be that much).

Two weeks ago my partner's 2003 Z8 Alpina had some very minor body work....a few surface scratches on the front bumper, and replacing one blinker assembly....$920.00. The damage in your picture is at least 3-4x more than his.

Get a quote from another shop that specializes in BMW or MBZ...they can be just as good, and maybe you can save a few hundred bucks (or more)!!!

your insurance writer should be slapped ..No collision??I didn't know that was possible with a 2 yr old car? you must own it outright or something. Sorry to hear about your bender man, its just that its strange to think an agent didn't highly recommend this coverage..

I just had mine done and it was not that much, In order to avoid putting in an insurance claim I went shopping for a good body man, the trick here is to let the guy know that you have to pay for it yourself ( although it's sometimes hard to get sympathy driving a BMW) but most of these guys will give you a break, looking at the pictures, it does not seem so bad and 2000 seems like alot, although it looks as thoughyour door is out of wack, if it's not, to touch that up should be about 500-900 bucks, do some shopping!!! You may be suprised to find out some guys are understanding to your situation. Good luck!!

thnx guy, going repair shop hunting :)

jonny, the car is actually just over a year old (march 03) and i was absolutely positive that collision coverage is not even an option, but a must. Because of my age the insurance is quite expensive ($2800 and more per year),so i asked the agent to find the cheapest option for me, not realizing that it might mean less coverage. i still think that it's partly the agent's fault, because i was never told that something will not be covered... and haven't carefully read the policy myself :(

Even if you had read it, I doubt it would make any sense. My policy is written to be completely incomprehensible.

The car insurance industry makes me ill. A free enterprise with a monopoly of demand.

Age and sex discrimination. Imagine if old women were carved out for special premiums instead of young men? They would be marching on the capital!

Sorry to hear about the mishap. BTW, I've heard some good things about the JMK www.jmkbmw.comhttp://www.jmkbmw.com dealership bodyshop regarding paint. I am considering getting molding done on mine to match the body color and quite a few ppl reco'd them. I would get some touch up paint on it asap though. That bare metal is going to look nasty once some moisture gets around to the oxidation process.

If it helps, it doesn't look that bad in the pic.
