I'm new to this newsgroup, just having taken possesion of a 232i.

This seems like a great source of information, and I know I'm going to be needing lots, I'm sure. So first off...

It appears evident that the stock CD changer in this model does not support CD-R's or CD-RW's. My question then is, could I just replace the CD changer with a newer unit that does read CD-R's? Would a newer unit from the same manufacturer or even from a newer model 325 be a plug and play operation?

Any input would be greatly appreciarted. and thanks in advance.

Are you sure they aren't MP3's on those burnt CD's? If they are MP3's, you should be able to just switch out the changer with an Alpine CHA-S634 changer, Ai-Net to M-Bus adapter, then a Soundgate or BlitzSafe adapter. Total cost of between $300 and $400 depending on where you get your changer.

You don't need the liner or install kit since you already have that with your existing setup.

The setup referred to by cavedweller will read CD-Rs and CD-RWs burned with cda or mp3 format music. However, it is not exactly plug-and-play as you need adapters and cable converters. It is plug-and-play as far as it will plug into your BMW harness without any mods.

Yes, a newer factory unit will read CD-R (not CD-RW). I am not sure what year the OEM units started supporting CD-R. But it must have been after your car year.
