Recently in my 2001 e46 xi, ive been hearing a clanging noise mainly when driving over bumps or rough road areas(with windows down it is more audible) it sounds like it could be towards the back of the car but im not positive. The sound can best be desribed as the noise you hear when two wrenches hit each other, its that metallic cling/clang sound. Had my car on a lift last week all the bushings are fine, the lift was a flat lift though so the wheels couldnt drop down to inspect the wheel well, but all arms and supports seemed fine, this noise is driving me insane i even checked the brakes thinking it was a loose pad, but still nothing...
The other sound ive experienced is a slight clunk that occurs when im in traffic where the car is shifting, if i let the car idle forward and then touch the gas with ease there is no clunk, if i press the pedal a little strong though it clunks, now it doesnt do this if i take off from a complete stop in fact the automatic transmission shifts like butter, but rolling in traffic to gas just may be the car going down in gear then back up quickly, but if anyone has heard this, was it something you could fix, or is it one of those "it comes with age" things and not much to worry about?
