Cleaning off mildew/algae off convertible roof

I own a 1996 328I convertible. I need to waterproof the hood. Due to the weather conditions the hood has mildew and algae patches on it. Could anybody recommend a suitable hood cleaner that actually works, whether it's a shop bought solution or a home remedy.
