While driving this morning my climate control went dead, no fan, no temp.display, none of the buttons work. All the buttons are back lit so I guess there is power, all the fuses are O.K. so what do I do? BTW the head unit was replaced last summer. I could really use some help as it's still warm down here. Thanks.

Yikes? Out of warranty yet? If not, I'd head straight to the dealer.
this is simply a brilliant response ...congratulate that man!

check out the fuse first then your fan (or blower) resistor ( a common failure) it looks like a hedgehog takes 5 minutes to replace. its down in the passenger side footwell behind the glovebox ...unscrew that first. ill dig out pics and instructions later ...remind me im on my lunch break right now...oh and save yourself a couple of quid or 100 too!!!!!!

What is the climate control system itself doing? (I.e., has it kind of gone haywire?)

What the posting above is talking about is the final stage unit, which is a common failure. It's about 80 bucks or so, and is pretty easy to replace. When mine went out, my HVAC display still lite up and worked 100%, but the system did not actually respond to any user inputs. It would also randomly change fan speed.

I've also heard that the HVAC units themselves are prone to fry, but it is also an easy fix. May be able to find something on the board; but if not there are a bunch of companies out there dedicated to specifically that wherein you pull the unit out and ship it to them, they make the repair and ship it back.

Just my 2 cents.
