Clutch Replacement Cost

Hi all.

I just had some final repairs done on my '01 330 convertible before the warranty ends, and the dealership reported that my clutch is 70 percent worn.

Two questions:
1. What sort of life have people gotten out of a clutch? It only has 50K miles, I'm the second owner-- purchased at 40K miles. I know driving habits vary, along with city vs. highway. . .but that seems to be wearing awfully fast. (My SHO has over 100K on the current clutch.)

2. If anyone has had a stealership replace the clutch, what is the approximate cost? (I know this will vary a lot too, but I wanted to get a rough idea.)

Thanks!

70 percent worn?? Holy shit. The guy before you must have never used the brakes on hills!! The clutch in my E30 lasted 180,000 miles!

The clutch itself and all the related parts will cost you about $400, but the labor on an '01 will be pretty high. The dealership usually puts it at $1400 for the job but any decent mechanic can replace it for you at a much MUCH lower cost.

I think your dealership may be exaggerating a bit, but that mileage does not seem unreasonable. Clutch life also depends on the strength of the clutch itself.

I imagine the dealership is exaggerating on the wear. The original clutch in my '87 lasted 260,000 miles. If they aren't replacing the clutch under warranty for you, then I'd just wait.

50,000 miles for 70% wear is unreasonable in my opinion unless the clutch has been abused. BMW uses strong clutches in their cars, and they are known to typically last a good long while before needing replacing, although not usually 260,000 miles like mine did.

It's really hard to say if the dealer is exaggerating the wear because we don't know how well the previous driver took care of the car. On my last car, my clutch lasted 110,000 miles and that's from driving it fairly hard.

But expect the cost of replacing the clutch to be around $2k from the $tealers. If you go to a reputable transmission shop like Eric stated, they can do it for much less.

Wow thats a lot of money, and the thing is they have all the right tools too. Replacing a clutch isn't that difficult. [paranoid]

In normal driving a clutch should last at least 100K miles. Now if you like to drag race and pop the clutch at 4K rpms, then you will be lucky to get 20K miles on a clutch. So it depends on how you use it. I've seen guys get 200K miles on a clutch but they never down shifted. They figured it's a lot cheaper to get new brakes than a new clutch.

If you drive around with your foot resting on the clutch pedal it will wear faster as well. I see this alot in drivers schools. And you can see it on the freeway regarding brakes..lights on a lot!
