I noticed that all of the pictures of the Navigation Screen on the E46 M3, including the picture in the catalog (in PDF form on www.bmwusa.com), have the word "Code" as a feature selection in the menu. I know how the "Code" feature works on the 5 Series, but my M3 doesn't have this selection. How do I get it to appear on the nav screen? I'm posting here because I think it's the same NAV on all 3 Series cars.

I can tell you this much.....the screen on mine looks nothing like the pics in the '04 330Ci brochure and not exactly like the M brochure pic. It's like they have upgraded the software but the pictures do not reflect the latest software.

Mine has an "emergency" menu selection right above "settings". The emergency menu displays my current location, heading, altitude, and last six digits of my VIN.

Don't see that in the M brochure either.

The 2003 540i has it. I think its the E39? I forget. I have the video that comes with the 540i. It has nothing to do with the radio. The "Code" feature allows you to set a 4 digit code before you leave your car. This way, even if someone finds your key, they cannot start your car without being prompted to re-enter the code. I guess you may use it to password protect your car while the babysitter/kids are at your house with your car keys.

My friend's E36 M3 also has this feature, although his is accessed through the On-board Computer using the 1000, 100, 10 and 1 buttons. He also has a "Code" button on the bottom row of buttons next to the timer and mileage buttons. If you forget the code, it's a pain in the a$$ to get the car started as you have to call BMW.

I would upload the video to a web site, but I haven't figured out how to get it off the CD. I think it's in a proprietary format.

I don't mean this in a bad way but the answer is.......if you don't see the "code" menu in your nav system, then you don't have it.

You have a different version of software than what is shown in the brochure.

It's like saying "I have Windows XP on my computer, how come I don't have a File Manager icon like Windows 3.1?"

My point is......the screen shot shown in the brochure is not accurate for your car. I think sometimes BMW leaves old pix in their brochures. For example, in the 2004 brochure for my car there is a pic of the interior that shows the headlight switch. But there is no "A" position in the pic. In other pix of the interior showing that switch, you can clearly see the "A" position. They have not updated the pic for whatever reason.

What does the service rep say about you not having the "code" selection?

That Code feature is for European models only. I believe when your car is stationary you can punch in the code and watch TV.
