I just got a 99 323i and the light that is under the rear view mirror is for the alarm that the car has... Now the light does not flash when i lock the car... I was thinking that its probably burnt out but when I tried setting the alarm off it wont do anything... why is this... can the alarm be disabled from another source and I have to turn it back on.... or could it just have a problem...??

Is it a stock alarm or aftermarket? My guess is that it's not enabled by the dealer.

I had mine disabled because it was causing my proximity sensor to go off in my aftermarket alarm.

So you do have the alarm, right? The light routine and the alarm routine are different so you could have the alarm installed and ready to arm, with no lights. (Do your corners blink when you lock at least?) If not, your whole light routine is off, you'll need to take it to a dealer to turn it on. If the corners do blink, just not the clown nose, it might be it's burnt out or something like that.

good info

I was wondering about this

I have no lights, sounds, etc when I arm/disarm. Haven't tried intentionally setting off alarm yet though. Doors lock/unlock with handset. I think I'll have dealer at least turn on flashers - peeking in windows to see if doors are locked is getting old....

what happens to "clown nose" (LOL) when system is armed? Does it blink?

is the motion sensor box installed on every car too (regardless of whether or not you have the alarm)? Now I'm wondering if mine even has an alarm. LOL....newbies!

blue - try to set off your alarm, to be sure ya got it. Just keep a window down, lock it up, and stick your arm in the window. if you set off the motion alarm you have the OEM one, at least. (Who knows what you might have aftermarket if it's not a new car). If it set off the alarm, then you can just get the light routine turned on at the dealer. If it winds up you don't have the alarm (or do, and it's TOTALLY not turned on) they may try to charge you to get it running.

Oh and the clown nose will blink like the CD player in the dash does once the light routine is on.

petakos - I bought the OEM alarm and did the DIY install last month. It took me about 2 1/2 hours (taking my time) to install it. It wasn't too tough, I think my angel eyes were the most tedious thing I've done so far.. At the very worst even if you don't want to do the install, you should buy the alarm yourself from somewere online at a good price, vs what the dealer will charge. Then find someone who's good at cars and reading to follow the DIY and save you the 200-300 the dealer will wanna charge to install it themselves. [thumb]

Well here's the link to the DIY that I followed. Take a look at it, if he's installed alarms before, he'd be familiar with this, and I'm sure could do it. All you're doing is running a few motion sensors, and bolting on a few things, and thats it (the car is 'wired' for the alarm, you're just putting in the sensors, and stuff ot make it work).

Hope this helps!
