I am considering buying a '01 330ci convertible. Is there anything I need to know about this model year, any issues or problems? What options are considered required by most enthusiasts? Any information or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

Welcome aboard. There have been some cold start issues associated with a lot of E46 models. A visit to your dealer should fix this problem.

...then there's the dreaded "sliptronic" issue -- it's been written about a LOT on this board, so you should read about it. I've had no such troubles with my '04 but you should be aware for earlier models. Also, if you find a used one you like, you should have someone take a look at the automatic top mechanism. There have been some complaints on the board about bad seals and rattles. Again, I've had no such problems with mine (knock on wood).

Hmmm... "required" options -- that's a bit subjective. If I were you, I'd make sure I found one that had the sports, premium and cold weather packages (if all available that year). They make the car a stand-out ride ;-)

My wife has an '01 330cic (White). It has the sport pkg but not prem package. We like it a lot. No problems with the Steptronic at all in over a year of our ownership and just over 60kmi. It's a great car and I wouldn't hesitate to buy used, but consider getting it at a dealer with the certified pre-owned warranty. It gives you peace of mind, if nothing else. According to the Steptronic sticky FAQ, the problems were after this model year.

Would definitely get CPO from dealer or find out about extended warrantee; they're probably the same thing as there are deductibles on CPO cars after the standard warrantee expires. I bought a 2000 323 cic in 2002 (CPO) and had no significant problems with the top or the Steptronic. The A/C / Heat occasionally didn't seem to function right, but it wasn't constant and I never tried to get it fixed; I think I have heard of others with this glitch, too. They could never fix the rear speaker rattle I had from the start either. When I got my 04 330, it felt "tighter". It wouldn't surprise me to start to experience little electrical problems after 4-5 years, as I've heard the German cars have this quirk, too.
