I installed my hoist for the 330cic hardtop a few weeks ago. This is a nicely made piece of equipment. I wanted to get the hardtop up and out of the way to keep it protected from dings, scratches, etc.
It took about 4 hours to install. I reengineered the installation which added to the time, but made it a safer, more flexible installation. The standard install suggests using a board to spread the load across several ceiling joists. I used a product called Unistrut (you guys who work in industrial plants probably know about this stuff) to build a frame that spreads the load over 4 joists at a span of about 5 feet. I then used a wheeled trolley inside the Unistrut so I can slide the top front or back. My wife is going to make a bag out of polar fleece type material to keep it from getting dusty, etc.
In the lower shot you can see a 3/8" socket. They included that in the package to put in a drill chuck so you don't have to use the manual crank. Right now, they only make this for the 3 series BMW.
