So as of this weekend, I'm a happy owner of my first ever BMW (1991 325ic). It's a great car and I'm thrilled...

My only problem in this purchase is an outstanding issue w/ the power top: it does not move the top up/down, it's just making a clicking sound as if it's jammed or off track. My guess is the motor is either shot or the mechanism is broke.

Meanwhile, I'm s.o.l. w/ enjoying this convertible because although I can manually push the top down, the lid won't lock in place the way the manual does.

I'd really appreciate some advice from anyone that's seen this ordeal before.

Cheers,

Joe

I've seen and heard about this many times before. It is usually the motor, they have a bad reputation for reliablity. Be careful the frame rails for the top do not get bent. Unfortunately I don't have more information. Some club members have converted to the manual system after much frustration. I'm sure some of our other forum members with a convertible may be of some assistance with this problem. If not, try the Pelican Parts web site, Jared at Pelican is quite knowledgable.

This morning I spent some time digging thru the entire system... turns out one of the mechanical gear systems in the back (specifically the one that lifts the lid, not the one that moves the top) is missing, the motor gear doesn't align w/ the mechanism when it's engaged, and there isn't a way to adjust it.

So... looks like I'm gonna have to buy a new assembly, and I'll probably just do both so I have piece of mind.

But a convert to the manual system, eh? I'm open to that... anyone care to comment?

Cheers,

Joe
