Hey,

Well, I juss got home from being out with friends and as I was driving home my check engine light came on.....I realized that my car wasn't changing gears properly even with the throttle all the way down. I pulled over and as I stopped the car was idling roughly and the whole cabin was shaking mildly. Naturally I got freaked out and pissed off, and I decided going home is the best thing because my dad owns his own mechanic shop. Well about a mile from my house the light goes off and I stop at a light...no more shaking...so I'm like ok cool something really cool happened or something realy really bad just happened. Well I got my car home and in the garage and got a look at some of the belts, they all looked ok. I initially thought it was the timing belt but they all looked fine. So my question is...what do you guys think? a belt that slipped back on? or something more sinister happen to my engine? [}:)] Any help is appreciated. Sorry for the long thread

P.S. Oh yea I gotta drive 3 hours to Austin and back tomorrow, think I should risk it? Or ask a friend to borrow a car?

Slack, I posted an almost exact same experience here recently. You didn't say what car you have. Mine is a 330xi. I was driving, engine light went on, car started vibrating every time I touched the accelerator. Freaked out and pulled over, but had mine towed to the nearest dealer. They scanned the computer and found a "Misfire Code #5" which they said explained the light and vibration. They couldn't repeat the problem so they said they were sure it was a freak occurance caused by some impurity in the gas line. Apparently the 330 engines are extremely sensitive. When the car was shut off and started up again the impurity apparently cleared itself out and everything has been perfectly fine since then. I'm not happy about it, but I'll just be a little more careful about the gas I use and hope it never happens again. Good luck.

Same thing happened to me. Cylinder failed and engine was riding on 5 out of the 6. Steve I was told exactly the same thing about the gas though and I was told that if it ever happened again just to turn the car off and then on and the computers should clear everything. [:)]
