I saw your post regarding the safety of the BMW and I went back to my incident last year. She ran a red light coming off the highway just as I was crossing under the highway passing the off ramp... She was in a Jimmy. I was pretty mangled (cuts everywhere and a hairline fracture to the hip) but it could have been much worse if I was in another vehicle, like the jeep cherokee I ahd JUST gotten rid of. Any way here's the pic....I still get goosebumps. Oh yeah, she was uninsured! grrr.

Hey JC,

First....I'm so glad you survived a horrible side swipe (I assume you were the passenger?)

Secondly...thanks for sending the pics. Just seeing your pics gives me goose bumps too. Comparing our accident to yours...looks like we were hit it the exact same spot!!! Excellent to see that a Bimmer sedan holds up so well too, as did the SAV!!

Did your insurance total your car? Took almost 3 weeks of going round and round with our Ins., until finally a very sensible (and nice) manager adjuster verified that the frame on the X5 was bent, and they could not certify the structural integrity. I see you got a new Mystic Blue 3er. Mystic blue is def. one of my top 3 BMW colours of ALL time!!!

With your pics....it just cements my belief in the importance of having a safe car. BMW, Volvo, MBZ, Audi..... Yes, they can be a "status" symbol....but again they prove to be a life saver!!!

I was the driver! That's how fast she was going. The center console pushed over enough to jam me between it and the door and the passanger seat was unhinged on the side by the door. Thank God I didnt have someone in the car with me.

I was very impressed with the shape of the car given the magnitude fo the accident seeing as her Jimmy looked like a crushed pepsi can. I havent seen a car eject the engine before.

My insurance, Allstate, was a hassle to work with. They took just over a month to get everything worked out making me provide receipts and documentation for the wheels and other upgrades (from the dealer) I had installed. I think they thought me a dumb kid, I dont know. I ended up getting only 80% of the cars worth and given the amount of money I spent on doctors I ended up getting into a 99 Saab 9-3 after that. Cheap and good but definately not up to par with BMW.

I agree with paying what you get. There is a reason those fine automobiles cost what they do and after being in an accident that helped solidify their safety record, I am sold. I have friends buying brand new 30,000 + american cars that give me hell about status but like I tell them, for that money you can get a very nice Certified luxury car with better performance than what they end up with...not to mention the great resale value.

The car is actually Orient Blue...I made a snafu and haven't fixed that....will do so now though. The colors are close anyway ;-)
