I just purchased a used 2000 323i for my wife. It's a 5spd and seems like a great little car. However, I have been hearing this annoying sound in the rear end when I put it in and out of gear. Has anyone out there experienced the same situation?

A am considering updating the rear end on the car with respect to the suspension. I've also heard that i might want to watch the upper strut mounts, as they tend to wear rather quick.

I currently have a 1999 323i sedan - 5spd and I've never noticed a noise in the rear area of the car. I hate to state what I'm sure you've thought of already, but did you check the trunk? It could be that on the less-smooth shifting, there's something rolling around back there or simply loose. You didn't say what kind of a noise it is, but you might check the spare tire compartment...

Other than that - take it in. I realize that it's probably out of warranty, but there should be no noises... especially not annoying ones...
