I was wondering if anyone who has one will agree that it makes a whistling type noise every time you begin to accelerate. I don't know if it's a good or bad thing, but I hear all the time no matter the gear I'm in. Please someone confirm this so that I don't think I'm crazy. Thanks![paranoid]

You don't go crazy. [:D] It indeed whistles. My ECIS does so also.

GruppeM and RD Sport are "quiet" due to Ram-Air effect. These just deliver pure induction noise. [thumb]

You will have to remove it from the pipe. It is tricky, but can be done w/o removing the front bumper. The filter will be attached by a clamp. Just use a screwdriver to remove it.

Dinan uses K&N cone filters. You can pick up a cleaning kit from your local AutoZone and such. Then spray the filter with the cleaning solution from the kit and follow the instructions how to rinse it. Re-oil with the supplied bottle, again carefully following the instructions. If you put too much oil you may damage the MAF sensor. Re-install.

Check for dirt every 5,000-7,500 miles and clean if necessary, but not later than every 10K miles.

Thanks

Thanks for your response. I'm recovering from a broken ankle, so I haven't been upside down under the car to see. (4 breaks, 2 plates, 16 screws)

We've used K&N filters before. Our 850i had 2 of them. However, they were much more accessible for maintenance.

I have the cleaner/oil kit.

BTW, there were posts in our user group about contamination of mass airflow sensors? if the filter was sprayed with oil, and the car driven too soon. Another issue was carry over of extemely fine particulate that passed through K&N filters, that would have been retained by the OEM filter.

Here's a link to a test I found on the miata forum www.miataforum

http://www.mcagraphix.com/filter/test.htm

I'm concerned that our Dinan CAI filter needs maintenance.

Regards,

Dave Lynch

Yep, that's the risk you take with any CAI. [:(] Any "wet" filter will carry a danger of spraying oil on the MAF sensor, most likely if oiled too much. As for the less filtration, that's a trade off - you must flow more air, hence the filter must allow more flow. OEM filters better at the expense of flow, but honestly the difference is negligible.

Also, any filter must be serviced at some point. OEM filters are thrown away (you can also do that to K&N), but it's cheaper to service an aftermarket one.

My concern is the design of the intake itself, the position of the filter. It makes service a major PITA. I also don't like how low to the ground it sits. The filter tends to collect a lot of dirt and may suck in water - very bad. [:(]

Ram-Air is like what the Pontiac's have - the air is "forced" into the intake the faster you go, as you are "ramming" the air into the filter allowing to burn more fuel - more hp.

Gruppe M and RD Sport systems are as close as you get to "ram-air" in the BMW's. These are not 100% ram-air however, as you'll need to remove the headlight assembly for that.

Well we went to the bmw/dinan shop today.

They said:

* Dinan air filter on CAI is throw away; have to remove the bumper to change it!

* Our Dinan throttle motor is shot and needs to be replaced. Apparently Dinan Canadian warranty is only 1 year! That was installed on a brand new (at the time) 2002 330 coupe! That sucks. So the Dinan warranty lapses before the other components of the car.

* They warned me not to drive the car!

Does anyone here have experience with Dinan components to tell me if this is normal? Nice car, but....

ps It seems sacreligious to put 2002 330 together like that. Friend had a wonderful tii....

Sounds like Dinan at it again. [fake]

I feel really sorry for your car. I really don't know how the Canadian part of their business runs....

The air filter is washable, if they used K&N. I bet they just want to sell you a new one for big $$. All you need is a K&N cleaning kit. Unless the filter is beyond help, i.e. bent up or torn apart.
