hi guys,

was wondering if anyone has used disc brake caliper lube to lubricate your brakes? if so, where would you put this lube? and how difficult is this to put on? i'm having a tough time removing my caliper because there is a lip on the rotor that my pads cannot get past to remove them(don't even really know if i have to remove them to lube them up but i am replacing the pads as well). i noticed that my caliper was somewhat not releasing all the time and i was getting some wheel vibration. thanks in advace for your help.

You should put lube on the caliper slide surface and the back of the pad where it contacts the piston. According to Bentley, you should not put lube on the caliper pins on a BMW. Some other car manufacturers recommend putting it on the pins, go figure.....

If you are replacing the pads, you need to compress the cylinder to make room for the new, thicker pads. This will take care of the lip problem.

You should probably check the rotor thickness. If you have a significant lip and you are getting vibrations, it could be that the rotor is warped because it is to thin and overheated. Replacing the pads will not solve your problem in this case.

Frosty, a big C clamp to push that piston back in will help immensely in getting the caliper on over the new pads. I have always lightly greased my caliper pins and on the Bimmer they are so well protected with covers it should not be a problem of attracting dirt. Did you get your 323 at Calgary BMW? I purchased my wife's 325i there in March of 2003 and we are thinking of possibly trading it in now on an X-3. If so, what is your overall opinion of Calgary BMW? I am currently living in Colorado Springs but am moving to California this summer with the Canadian Forces and we are seriously considering trading up to a 3.0 X-3.

Hey captjack, I didn't purchase my car thru Calgary BMW but purchased it privately. I do recommend Calgary BMW for their service and support though. I would definately buy one there if I was looking at a new vehicle right now. Good overall service. They have a good deal on leasing an X3's right now too, well, 2.5% lease rate.

Good luck in your search for your next BMW!!!
