Do I have bluetooth or Assist ?

If you have a bluetooth enabled device such as a phone, then "pair it" by inputing your passkey that came with your car. If you don't have a bluetooth card with your owners manual then you problably have BMW assist only. My car came with both. My bluetooth phone and car work about 95% of the time. Its a nice feature for hands free operation and storing your contact list.
If you have bluetoth you can hit the button on the sterring wheel and it should say Activate Phone. If you have Assit you will look at your rear view mirror and you will see a flip down section on the right bottom part of the mirror and it will have the two buttons for assit and emergency. Or just look on the top of the car, it will have the shark fin antenna

If you determine that you do not have Bluetooth, you can go to this website; www.bimmernav.com. The guy you want to talk with is Martin. He has the parts you would need for the install. My story, I have a 2005 325I, E46, production date 8/04. Vehicle came with Assist, no Bluetooth. I did my research and came across his web site. Talked with him several times and he told me what I would need for Bluetooth. Ordered the parts, did the install, in my case 30 minutes. BINGO, Bluetooth, please note that Assist was lost after doing the install. The guy was absolutely awesome to deal with!
