I'm about to pull the trigger on a 325i that hit the port in NJ on March 10th. Was wondering if I could ask the dealer to check the VIN against a "database" that he might have.

I had to stop in for the dealer to check my VIN on the spot and he immediately told me he would order the new tranny. I imagine there is also a part # on the tranny that has to be checked to be sure that such an expensive replacement is necessary.

Do us a favor and let us know if you find out that they do. My dealer claimed that the only way to know for sure was to test drive it on coldstart and then to hook it up to a diagnostic machine of some sort. It would be very helpful to others if you find out that there is some way to check it by the VIN.

They did not do any of that before letting me know they were ordering a new one. I was at the dealer for less than 15 minutes, and they had the car for 5. I'll definitely ask when I go in for the replacement. The guy told me, though, that he was just going to check 'the number' and I assumed it was at least the VIN, but possibly an ID on the tran. itself.
