driving with A/C on

It was a blistering 60 Degrees F outside (in Colorado) so I had to turn on the A/C. Didn't notice any difference in gas mileage or engine revving but I was on the highway. Since this will be my first Summer with a Bimmer, I was wondering if you veterans noticed any effects on the vehicle when driving with the A/C on. Did the gas mileage suffer dramatically and is degraded performance noticeable in city driving?

well, as far as my experiences are concerned i did nor notice any changes. gas mileage...no cause it is always a little high [hihi] and performance wise i did not recognize any thing either.

i wouldn´t mind the A/C on while driving, especially as your car has enough power to compensate that little a/c unit.

Same here. Practically no difference in performance, unless starting off line. It's a bit sluggish, but only if you really pay attention.

If you floor the gas, the A/C will switch off for a while giving you extra available power.

Use your a/c all the time even in winter (if you get those over there) I'm in the UK and my a/c is on permanantly in my 535IA sport and my wife has hers perm on in her Z3. In the winter time you will have the joy of virtually instant clear window and they'll stay that way. There's an old addage wher a/c is concerned....if you don't use it, you'll break it 'cos the seals dry out and that's when it becomes expensive....enjoy your a/c ALL year round.

also, *i believe* the a/c cools and filters the air and then rewarms it. let me know if i'm wrong.
You're close[:)]- the air conditioning system actually removes humidity from the air before cooling or heating it in order to keep the windows from steaming.

i notice a difference, not dramatic, but i usually only put it on if i'm in traffic and its 90 degrees, or per request of whoever the pretty lady sitting shotgun is.[;)]

a/c improves mileage

If the choice is a/c on or windows rolled down, at hiway spds the mileage w/ windows down is worse due to aerodynamic drag. Agree w/ all those who say leave it on - parasitic drag on engine is negligible under normal running and a/c should declutch under heavy acceleration.
