Hello everyone, I JUST took delivery of a FULLY optioned 2000 323ci with 40K miles and coming from a 1995 vw jetta and I gotta say that i love my bmw. I was going through all the instruments and I noticed when the DSC was turned on, that the indicator light in the gauge cluster stays on. I checked the owners manual and it says it stays on when there is a malfunction. What do I need to do to take care of this, and what are the typical causes of this? Also im in the washington DC area and was wondering if there are any good independant mechanics around that could fix this problem

thanks

The DSC is defaulted on when you start your car. This is not indicated, in fact the lack of an indication in the dash cluster tells you that it is on and not malfunctioning.

I think you have pressed the DSC button which actually turns off the system.

If the system is turned off or malfuntioning, that is when you see the indicator in the dash illuminate. Also, you may see the light flash if the system actually goes active while driving.

Bottom line is you do not turn on the DSC, it is on by default. You turn it off by pressing the DSC buton.

Welcome and congratulations on the purchase! Feel free to hang out here and ask any questions anytime. Chances are we will give you a better answer than the dealer (and maybe more than you ever wanted to know!)

We only ask for one thing in return - PICTURES of your car!!

[thumb] Congrats on your new purchase, I too have a 2000 323i however mine has a whole lot more miles than yours... I too live in the NCR and often take my car to J & F Motors on Four Mile Run over in Arlington, VA for my day to day work and down to Sports & Imports in Chesapeake, VA for the heavy lifting. Welcome to the board, hope to see you on the local highways and by-ways in the local area. My bimmer is red with BMWCCA MD plates. Happy Motoring...[driving2]

I recomend that you push the button and turn it off and then find yourself a nice open and safe road to boot the throttle while turning into a corner. With the DSC off you can lose and then catch the back end for a quick power slide. All good fun.

Pushing the button once turns off the first level of DSC, pushing and holding it also turns off ABS I believe. Perhpas someone can clarify that.

Holding it turns off DBC - Dynamic Braking Control. This is when the system applies the brakes to a spinning wheel.

ABS is always on, you cannot turn it off.
