I hear $150 from many places around the country. Requires you to bring proof you own the car (like registration papers, etc.) in person.

I know you didn't mention how you came to have only one key but........If the car was bought new by you, it was supposed to come with 2 keys.

its not just a key its a coded key that will only start that car even if it is cut to fit the locks of another car and you can only get so many keys i think its 7 or ten and then you have to replace the ews computer and or the dme thats why they are so expensive and you need the vin # and a copy of the reg and drivers license to get one from the dealer

even at $250, it doesn't sound too bad. esp since your key would have the remote functionality.

the only reason i say that is because my friend lost his master key for his honda prelude, and it cost him 300 or so for a new key and ignition. it was going to cost him at least another 200 to get the remote and have that programed. not to mention changing all the key locks because the new key wouldn't fit! and added cost associated w/ that.. [:(] they mentioned that the parts (key and remote) were relatively cheap, but the programing fees was what drove the price up.

i suppose it's nice to have ignition protection codes in place, but once you lose your key, it'll be time to pay.. ....

I picked up the 03 last month. I figured let someone else handle the initial depreciation. the dealer only had the one key.

Was it a CPO car? I believe BMW has a rule that their CPO cars have to go out with at least two keys. Call up or e-mail BMW about it (one of the rare instances BMWNA can be helpful). You may be able to get it for free. Your dealer may deny it (I remember a post somewhere where the dealer did deny it), but after a "chat" with BMWNA, the dealer realized that, like most BMW dealers, they didn't know what the hell they were talking about.
