Very nice. Hope it all works out. I was a stupid when I bought my BMW,... I knew nothing about the cars and models I just saw a 318 for $400 and bought it. If I would have thought about it I would have gotten a bigger 6 cyl engine. You can do more mods. But I have no regrets... I'm only 16 and I needed a good reliable car to get me to school and work. It has over 230,000 miles on it and it has started EVERY single time I've started it. I've a little work to it, but the biggest is gonna be the paint job and fiberglass bumpers this spring... then I'll see what I'm doing.

Dyno numbers

Let see the OE specifications are:

325i (M20 B25 Motronic)

Displacement 2494 cm3

Max Power 170 bhp (125 kW) 5800 rpm

Max Torque 222Nm(164 1b.ft) 4300 rpm

Compression Ratio 8.8:1

So if you take a 25% loss for the transmission and differential:

170 HP minus 143 HP your measured output

27 hp is 16% of the rated horse power.

Most Dyno manufactures use a 20% to 25% loss as a normal ratio.

164 lb.ft minus 138 lb.ft your measured torque

26 lb.ft is also 16% of the rated torque.

This is a very good baseline and if you use the same Dyno to measure the improvements you should get real numbers.

Looks good.

Unless I move out of the area I plan on using the same place for dynoing. The dyno they use is a Dyno Dynamics which is soposed to be the best for getting accurate #'s cause they can put a load on the car through the rollers. I have a K&N filter which should be here tomorrow, then hopefully by April I will have my Dinan chip. After I do those mods I'll go dyno again to see what I get. By the end of summer I want to put 180 HP to the ground.

Is there a reason you're going with the Dinan chip instead of the Jim Conforti chip? My limited understanding of the way the Dinan chip is programmed is that it only changes the programming over 3000 RPM where the JC chip changes it across the full RPM range. I don't speak for anyone on this board but I believe most would prefer the JC over the Dinan. I got the JC and was surprised and very happy with the level of improvement.

Just curious.

I'm going with the Dinan chip cause my buddy works at the local BMW dealer which is an authorized Dinan retailer. So I'm getting the chip at his cost which is about half off of the retail price. Plus the Dinan chip is smog leagal, and they have been proven to improve gas milage.

bet you it does not get better mileage

no way can you get both, performance and mileage.

The Vendors make lots of claims but I have yet to see one that made better mileage.

They all add more fuel and that means less mileage.

Most past buyers like JC over Dinan because the JC chip gives a lower RPM torque increase.

HP sells cars but torque makes you happy.

If you change the low RPM timing and fuel tables properly it will increase gas milage. The only reason it would be worse is if you put your foot in it more.

The mileage of my '89 with the Conforti chip increased by almost 10% in normal driving. It also improved part throttle response. On the downside you must use a minimum of 91 octane which costs more. The Conforti chip remaps the entire fuel and timing curve whereby others do not. That is according to Doug at Turner Motorsport where I got mine. The 91 octane works OK most of the year but if you get extreme hot temps as we do in the desert summers you may have to up the octane a little by mixing in some octane booster or unleaded 100 octane gas from your local Unocal 76 dealer if there is one nearby. Remember the M20 engine does not have knock sensors. At full throttle both Dinan and Conforti chips put out similar hp. The Conforti chips from Turner are the most popular within our local chapter (Sin City) of the BMW CCA

A more accurate way of saying this might be that at higher RPMs they put out similar hp. At lower RPMs if you open the throttle completely the Dinan chip doesn't start becoming effective until it gets over, I bellieve, 3000 or 3500 RPM.

Of course I could be wrong.
