I dropped my car off at the dealer on Tuesday morning, and picked it up today. They have to order parts for my side view mirrors and cabrio top (electric drives, relays and modules....going back to the dealer on 6-22-04), but according to the head service manager....my transmission is better than new.

Official BMW Servcie Bulletin # 24 07 03 is the fix to our sliptronics. The transmission lacks sufficient pressure boost for C1 forward clutch during first P to D or R to D after extended (overnight) parking.

At first BMW was replacing transmissons left and right, but it wasn't solving the problem, and in fact creating a whole new set of issues.

Hopefully this will work. They said they tried it, and it was perfect. Fingers crossed.

Also, for any of you who have intermittent power window issues...my car was fixed with service bulletin # B51 209 03. There is a re-initialization that needs to be done on late 03's and 04 3 series. [wiggle]

Just what exactly did they do for the transmission?

Software programming to adjust the pressure needed for the C1 clutch. When the problem first arrived, BMW was replacing the trannies. According to my dealer and the service bulletin...this is what the transmission needs, and was lacking. This is why once the initial slippage, or slow to engage happened....the trannie then worked fine.

I hope it does fix the problem permanently for you. Mine was a programming guinea pig in the fall of last year. A tech came in and reprogrammed it twice in one week. Both times it was better for a while, but came back.

Can I ask you to be a little more specific on your statement "At first BMW was replacing transmissons left and right, but it wasn't solving the problem, and in fact creating a whole new set of issues."? I'd like to know, because I am a recipient of one of those replacement trannys. Those of us who received them were led to believe that any mods that needed to be made (sw and hw) were done in those replacements. I'd like to know what issues were being faced by those who got replacements so I know whether to resurface this as an issue to my dealer. Thanks.

Hey Larry,

My dealer told me that some people who were given new transmissions just got lots of new problems...since replacing a transmission is a complicated project. It's not that the new transmission is bad, but now some people have faulty A/C, odd noises, difficult starting, rough idling, new (weirder) electrical gremlins...... This is all I was told, and have read on other BMW chat rooms and post boards.

Wouldn't this be the crapper for all you that got a "new" tranny if this fix works?

I see how Kirby may have tried this, but his reprogrammng was done last fall as an experiment it seems.

Maybe the software fix now is more comprehensive since BMW now understands the issue better. I sure hope so. It wouldn't be the first time software was used to fix a hardware problem.

I have been waiting to get mine fixed for this exact reason. I am making an appointment to try this fix.

I have to be honest ... with all due respect ... this sounds like heresay to me. I have yet to find anyone on any BMW board who has had the tranny replaced that has noticed any new problems unrelated to the tranny soon after the replacement ... other than people who were one of the first to have their trannies replaced last fall when the problem wasn't fully corrected in the replacement trannies yet. But this is interesting.

For the 03 325i where they ripped out the tranny
1) Faulty A/C. YES! (computer, temp settings, smell)
2) Odd noises. YES! (brakes, cracking)
3) Difficult starting. YES! (turned off several times on me, after a few days without driving it sounded like it was gonna fall apart on start up; nasty sound)
4) Rough idling. YES! (Engine vibrated and the car would shake.)
5) Electrical gremlins. YES! (foglights click sound, right signal light working intermittently, after switching right left 3-4 times the fault sensor would go out and it would work)

And on top of it the "new" transmission made a whine whirr noise and the job was done by incompetent Bmw manhattan. As far as my case everything he mentioned is true, therefore I agree. But thank God I don't have to deal with it anymore, good riddance! [clap] [wave] [burnout]

I was one of the "early" transmission replacement recipients. Also I had the work done at an incompetent dealership BMW manhattan, who caused most of the problems, but since I took it in for a trans job all the new issues can be grouped with the transmission swap.

Seems to me that all these other problems are unrelated to the transmission as a component.

If the Manhattan dealer (or any other) working on the car screwed up other things (as they've been known to do) while replacing the tranny, well then that is another problem altogether.....no?

Manhattan is still a great place to visit, even if the BMW dealer sucks eggs.

But it seems like he's the only one.

Sorry. I'd like to see more than one or two examples of this. This didn't necessarily have to be related to the tranny. If there were data that demonstrated say, 40%-50% of the tranny replacements had other problems that were directly related to the tranny replacement, my thinking would change. Based on all the reading I've done across all the boards, my "subjective" opinion is that I haven't really seen this. Just my opinion.

I had my tranny replaced and have had no problems with anything that could be associated to the replacement. No slipping has occured either after 6500 miles since the replacement.

i only had a slight slip in the trans (2-3 seconds) but a harsher downshift of gears when slowing down. Dealer reprogrammed the ECG this week and all seems to be going just fine.
