hi all. i'm new. [wave]

i just bought my 2001 325ci on Dec. 3rd and yesterday while driving home from work my Service Engine Soon light came on. i take it to AE Performance in Campbell this morning and they tell me that my Electronic Thermostat is stuck open and that they need to replace it. (i've noticed this is a problem with the 3-Series)

i've called around a few places and it looks like it's going to cost around $230.

does this price sound right?
how common is this problem?

Oh those aren't too bad. Hopefully a good PDR guy can take care of the scratches and dents so you dont have to take it to a bodyshop.

dents and leather is next on my list.

i got my thermostat taken care of and had another blinker put in ($270 total).

i asked about fixing my sunroof cover and they said it would be about $380 which isn't as bad as i thought it would it be, but isn't something that will be taken care of soon.

Sun roof cover thingy...

My 2003 330xi had a similar sun roof cover issue. The cardboard-like sliding part of the sunroof came off of the track so it wouldn't slide right... The BMW dealer replaced it for free as it was under the warrantee, but it was just a few little clips that I can't imagine would cost that much. It took them less than an hour to do it...

Your problem could be entirely different, though.

Make sure they are not replacing the whole sliding cover... just the track-clips. The dealer said its a common problem... (if you have what i had)....

Yeah I have heard about the sunroof cover being an issue with the 3 series. I have heard people complaining about it costing near a grand to fix. That's one expense I am afraid of - so costly and has nothing to do with under the hood.

I had my thermostat changed just before picking the car up and they created another problem that caused my coolant to leak out. Sounds like your guys did the job right!

Does the electronic thremostat also affect the fan from manually turning on ?
I am not 100% sure but I do think it affects your heat. I had the same problem when my thermostat needed changing and the car could not get warm.
