My 328i has following symptoms. The check engine (the engine icon) light comes on, then it shuts itself off the next day, then it will comes on again a day later, and shut off again in a day... and so on for the last several weeks. Any clues? I see no problem in the car's operation. Oil was changed and oil life counter was reset only 1000 miles ago. Please, shed some light. Thanks

Hey, yogi, I had this problem and it was the result of a faulty oxygen sensor. But the check engine light in your dash can come on related to any number of engine management problems. It often resets when you restart the car, but the engine fault is logged in the engine's computer. Go to a dealer and ask them to give you the code...so that you know what the problem is. Or, you can buy a little devise that you can hook up to the engine yourself and it will give you the code. You can find ads for those readers at the back of any BMW magazine. They cose about US$150...but in addition to reading fault codes...you can those devices to reset the oil service indicator when you change your own oil.

Again, my light comes on and off and on and off, everything on a daily basis. By having my light turn itself off, does that mean that there is no problem detected? Then, why does it come on again??
