Engine Light / Control Unit

After I jumped started my car, my engine light stays on when I drive. I took it to the dealer and was told my engine is fine but the "computer" needs to be replaced. On the work order print out, the parts to be ordered is "RMFD. CTL. UNI". I imagine it stands for Remanufactured Control Unit. I live in Europe and I was told the part will cost me close to 900 dollars. I was not able to find a cheap part in the internet. Anyone has any suggestion for searching for the part? Also, what is the exposure if I keep driving with the engine light on? Will I ruin the engine if there is a real problem later on? Thanks!

What model? what engine?

If you need the ecu, you can get one from the states (assuming you have the same engine) for a junk yard for around $200 US.

CEL is usually for emissions; I'm not sure if an ecu problem will trigger the CEL, but I'm not sure, so I'll defer to someone else on the board.

Good Luck!
