This is my first post on the BMW board. I purchased a 2001 330XI in June of this year and absolutely love the car.

My question: I have had the oil changed (w/ the correct synthetic) twice since I purchased the car. Both times, I drove the car approx. 5,000 - 6,000 miles prior to the oil change. Both times, right before I was going to have the oil changed, the yellow oil light came on indicating I was a little low. I topped the oil off and then had the oil changed....no big deal. I had the dealer check for leaks and they confirmed that the car was fine. I have driven some long distances prior to each oil change, and the car is a daily driver, but I was wondering whether anyone else has had a similar experience. As an aside, I have a friend with a 2001 Audi S4 and he had the exact same experience recently.

From what I have heard and experienced, oil consumption seems to be all over the place for the 3 series. Both of mine, so far, are less than 1 quart in 10K miles. But a lot of people report 3K to 5K for a quart. In the big picture, that's really not anything to worry about.

My '01 X5 that has the same motor as the E46 3 liter, uses some oil (about a quart every 5K). My E46 however has never used any oil in 19K miles.

The problem seems to occur on some and not others. Go figure that one out.
