engine oil or gear oil odor

Hi fellow BMW owners,

I own a 2003, 325i and i notice a strong odor in the cabin while driving. I think it comes from the truck area. At first i thought it was the leather seats but now i know it smells like some kind or oil or grease. The odor is strongest in the trunk. There is no spill or anything there. Please advise on what to do. I love the BMW ride otherwise.

Smell In The Trunk

Hi Garlee..........I Have an 03 325xi with the exact same smell in the trunk. Actually its smells like mildew to me, the dealer told me nothing is wrong, it eviromental, what ever the hell that means.

Another friend of mine also has an 03 325xi and the same dealer told her the same thing. Somehow I think some water gets into the rear compartment, which after awhile causes the mildew smell. Hell, who would have thunk it. Try a little fabreeze into the trunk once a month.

I know what you're talking about... My 325i ended up getting that smell after a milk container got a hole and leaked out about a pint or two. That musty smell you're talking about might be from the engine, it's something you need to grow used to as they all smell like that when they're new.

The dealer claimed it came from a wax they apply to the engine when shipping it.

Really? I am going to disconnect the fuse to the trunk lights and leave the trunk open in the sun for a few hours and see if that works. Thanxs for the advise though.
