ENGINE PROBLEMS injector noise?

About a week ago my engine started making a strange noise, and it progressively got louder as the days went by.the car doesn't idle well, doesn't have the power it did a week ago, and has a different sound in the exhaust. My dad and spent the last 3 hours listening to the engine trying to figure out where the sound is coming from. I took the valve cover off and looked at everything to make sure everything looked good, which it did. Then I put it back on and listened to the engine with a steshascope and everything under the valve cover sounded good, so I dont think its a blocked lifter. We believe the sound is coming from the intake side of the motor. I think it may be a bad injecton. listen to the video, and any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Eric

I would try some good quality injector cleaner like Redline's SI-1 before I replaced the injectors. Put a double dose in and you will be surprised how much that cleaner can reduce noise and clean dirty injectors. I ran it in my 91 318is and never had any noise even after 164k.

Check the intake system. A vacuume leak CAN make some weird noises and would undoubtedly cause the engine to run crappy.

Check the exhaust, make sure its not leaking. If it's leaking it could cause the O2 sensor to send back wrong voltages.

Just a side note, if you put seafoam in your oil, make sure you do an oil change within about 300 miles of using the seafoam.

I would not have put anything in my oil. No oil additive is going to help dirty injectors. Eric's idea has merit, I had a vacuum leak on my 318 and it clicked like an injector and the car ran rough. Mine was near the throttle body.

Well, if you have a car that burns the slightest bit of oil, or you have a bit of blowby, I think running seafoam in the oil and through the intake for maybe 20 or 30 miles can do a good deal of good, but if its let in the oil for more than a few miles, it can be damaging...especially to an O2 sensor (even though it says o2 sensor safe...)

One last idea, you sure the alternator is working fine? I know it might be too much 'out of the box' but if you had a fairly weak battery, and an alternator with bad bearings/bushings and/or voltage regulator, it would cause the car to run crappy. There was a noticeable loss in power when my alternator bushings went out on my E30, but it was mis-firing and stuff.

It might still be a lifter, the m42 was the first engine made by BMW to have hydraulic lifters, thats why I put seafoam in the oil. I already have injector cleaner in the gas, I replaced all the vacuum lines, connectors, and clamps about two months ago, and it ran fine, I also checked the exhaust after it started making the noise, even though the primary noise is a very loud clicking coming from under the hood. Thats why I think its either injector or lifter, because of the clicking, and the tone of the exhaust sounds like one of the pistons isn't fireing correctly.

I put the 5.0 injectors on and started it up, the noise was still there. I then listened to the noise for about 2 hours and figured out that the noise is in fact a lifter. The noise sounds like the engine is trying to suck a large volume of air through a small hole, ei. a valve isn't opening and the piston is pulling all the air/gas mix through one valve instead of 2, which means the piston isn'e getting enough, which results in it not firing correctlly, which in turn will make a strange exhaust tone.

Turns out, a washer was wedged in between an exhaust lifter and the carrier, all of the exhaust lifters were deeply gouged(sp), the carrier was tore up, and the camshaft was tore up also, all because the previoud owner left a loose washer in there from some work done on the cylinder head.

Damn!! [:0] You got pics? I hope there wasn't any other damage from the metal shavings.
