I want to rebuild my engine this summer I just wanted to ask a couple questions on it from people who have. First how much did you spend? Also what was replaced? Thanks guys

Well, this sorta depends on what you are expecting from the rebuilt engine.

But I will start with;
Complete engine gasket set
New rod and crank bearings
New water and oil pump
New pistons and rings (the pistons kinda go oval after a period of time, making just replacing rings rather difficult)
New freeze plugs (you should really "hot tank" the block to remove and build up)
New pilot bearing
New clutch and pressure plate and throw out bearing
New thermostat
New valves, adj. eccentrics and possibly rocker arms
New radiator hoses

Well my goal is to save up for a 3.0 lieter stroker kit for this summer. I know that would of course replace the pistons and such and I thought as long as I was down there I would rebuilt it better. Just trying to think of an estimated price for a rebuild along with the kit ($2500)

If you're planning performance upgrades I would add the following to my list above;
New Con rods
New valve seats
Performance dual valve springs (for that perf cam) Not sure that stock i springs will prevent valve float

Lots of machine shop work; dynamic balance of crank, rods and pistons and possibly flywheel. Head work, clean up intake and exhaust ports, heat up the head to replace valve seats.

Almost forgot! Plastigauge all bearings, specifically the con rods. BMWs are notorious for the con rod bearing tollerance.

man, just build a whole new m50 engine! its an easy swap (drop in and go, almost) and you wont have any down time. plus, you can rebuild your original engine and ebay it to balance extra costs on the m50!

Thats what i will be doing throughout next year. i can give you tips on the m50/52 engine, but dont care to learn much more about the m20, so im no help if you are stuck on what you mentioned.

i originally though about rebuilding my engine, but found out it would be highly beneficial to change. of course you lose the authenticity of your old car, but sounds like you were planning on that with the stroker kit anyway.

Yeah I thought about turbos/m50s but a m50 would require me to first of all find an engine, then I have to convery afm to maf and all the connectors. Plus If I do the stroker kit it has forged pistons so im one step closer to being able to put a turbo in.

someone with turbo experience needs to comment on this.
i believe its easier to attatch a boost system to a low pressure engine, while the stroker is all about natural aspiration because of its higher comperssion. but i suppose it works anyhow.

well, it all depends on the engine characteristics. its called a stroker because of its long stroke, thus creating more compression.
i guess i cant say anything about if a boost intake will be the right thing on the m20 stroker.

lets see here, a larger bore creates more torque, and longer stroke gives more horsepower..... just thinking out loud. here, check this out: http://www.corral.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=387871
