Engine upgrade

My 316i /1990/4 door salon is undergoing full restoration at present,I would like to replace the present engine with one of higher spec. (without going OTT)
Can anyone offer guidance/assistance as to what size engine's can be used, what other alterations would be necessary to replace the present one & degree of difficulty involved

hmm, are you redoing the suspension? Because if you want to go all out you can put a m50 in there, im trying to pickup a s52 for $3k with tranny and ecu. You can get them faily cheap its just installig it thats the trick. If your not redoing the suspension I have no idea what your car going to be able to handle for engine weight. Otherwise you could probably pickup a e30 325e/i engine for $800ish and should be pretty much a direct swap but dont quote me on that.

They have parts and info on the swap, I dont know of a place that tells how to swap a m20 motor up but I would guess it would be pretty easy, just put it in the opposite way of the way you took your out and swap up the ecu.
