Engine whining....

Just the regular FRAM brand one. Yeah it's more like a whistle... I've had it since I got the car. The mechanic told me it was a quirk of the car.... but I've never heard it on any other BMWs...

....i think its just the way the engine is
Its the gearbox simple as that. drive any oldish car without much sound deadening and you'll hear it. (classic mini is prime example) nothing to worry about. mine does it in 1st - 3rd also then the engine/wind/exhaust![[:D]](/images/smilies/biggrin.png "Big Grin [:D]")

Yeah, its just the wines out of the gearbox, its just the way they sound. All BMW's have it, you just hear it more in the E30's because there is less sound insulation. Mine makes the same sound, and it also sets it apart from others, it sounds cool, lol
As for the clicking it is the rockers hitting the top of your valves, because it is an overhead cam, and there are no lifters, there has to be clearences, and when it starts clicking you are able to adjust it, all u need are some feeler gaudges and a paper clip and a 10mm wrench. You adjust the little eccentric cams on the rockers. If you dont know what you doing tough dont try it, bucause u can get floating valves, and you can burn them too. It shows how to do it in the bently repair manual.

k my car does the wine as well i think it has something to do with the engine style ,a quark of all of the (is) engines do it it sounds like a turbo my car sounds cool ive had 5 people ask my if its turbo and when i turn on the ac it gets louder but still sounds cool and healthy i only hear it loudly when my windows are cold unless it is cold then its loud as a mother
