Hi ,

I own a BMW 330Ci . I got a problem , the exhaust brake is stuck and it doesnt close . Is there anything i can do about it? I also noticed a wire going to the fuel tank or something. Is it also something electrical? I have put some sort of spray to help it move but it wont move. Any ideas.

Regards ,
Chris

Have you checked your muffler bearings, they may need lubrication?

....sorry, couldn't resist, what in the world is the exhaust brake? And a wire going to the tank is probably the sending unit for the fuel guage.

He's probably talking about the backpressure valve in the tailpipe. The line is probably the vaccum line that controls the valve. It doesn't go to the tank, but it probably dives up into the car around the tank and appears to to go there.

I don't think you need those wires. Most likely it's the fuel pump - but the injectors working as a team can suck enough gas up from the fuel lines. You'll have gas without the pump. A lot of gas. You might loose a little power and it might not run as smoothly.

An exhaust brake IS a real thing guys. It's not on used for that purpose on a BMW, but it IS for real. I also think he's talking about the backpressure valve on a BMW

An exhaust brake is found mostly on DIESEL engines, usually on BIG, hardy, bullet proof diesel engines in trucks. It's also known by a brand name - JAKE BRAKE. Did you ever hear a tractor trailer make a loud ehaust noise coming down a hill? That's the sound a J.B. makes.

It actually CLOSES off the exhaust, creating backpressure on the engine, reducing exhaust flow. The result is that the exhaust backpressure on the engine helps to SLOW DOWN the truck, hence EXHAUST BRAKE.

Jake Brakes are illegal for use in some states....

You're essentially correct except that an exhaust brake doesn't completely close of the exhaust. There is a small bleeder-hole in the valve and it is the huge pressure of the gasses passing through such a small hole which creates the distinctive exhaust-brake noise.
