Starting earlier today, fan runs constantly, even after ignition is off. Have no idea why. Engine temp. is normal, heat and A/C operating normally, no warning lights, heat indication, nothing. Any ideas? Indicative of an electrical (switch open?) situation or something worse?

Any ideas are appreciated.

So when you turn the car off the fan is still running? Does it stop after a few minutes? Could be a bad switch, but I am wondering why? Can you pull the assigned fuse and stop it? By the way welcome to the bmwboard....we will see if some of our resident experts can help out.

actually I just found the fuse to turn it off (#41) and it was successful. So I guess there must be a thermostat for the auxiliary fan and it must be bad. can you confirm this? also, what is an approximate cost for something like that?

Thanks for the quick reply. I appreciate it!

There is a separate temperature switch for the electric fan. On the E36 it is mounted in the left side of the radiator (looking from the front). I suspect the E46 will have it in a similar location.

It should have a plug connection on it. Next time this happens, just unplug it from the temperature switch. If the fan stops, you know you have found the temperature switch and it is bad.

Guessing at the price - $20 to $30.
