First I want to thak everyone for all the infomation that you have all given me. I have learned quite a bit. Now for the new stuff.
Is there a way to know what all the features or options my car has in the way of electronics? The reason I ask is because on the truck lid of my car there are some little round buttons that say things like "prewired for alarm", "prewired for BMW cellular phone" etc. I thought my car had the alarm because it has the LED on the bottom of the mirror; however, now I'm not sure. I am also reading on here about having to go to the dealership and having things "turned on?. I just feel sooooo confused! [???1]
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The LED on the mirror is there whether you have the alarm or not.
The other prewired notices are just that - notices.

Finally, many of the later model vehicles have both key memory
and vehicle memory. There are a number of options for both and
I believe that they need to be set at the dealer. Of course,
they should also be able to tell you what is currently set.
There are sheets floating around the web that have variations
of options for these memories. However, I don't recall which model
year they covered.

I'm not aware of an automatic way of knowing all of the options
that you're car would have. There are VIN decoders around the web
that can tell you where car parts were made, when, tranmission type, etc.
but I don't know of any way other than to check or to have someone
else check.

Anything specific that you think you might have that you're wondering about?

One way to do this yourself is to try to understand all of the options that
were available for your model year and particular model and then just go
through one by one and see if they are there or work.

Good luck!

ddone - thanks for the response.

I would like for the doors to lock once the car goes forward, pass mirror to tilt down when in reverse, If there is an alarm - I would like it to be enabled and if not I would like to get something installed. etc. Also, there may be things that I don't know about. I was told by one of the guys that I work with that if I take my car to the dealership that they have a way to tell me all fo the computer controlled options then I can decide from there which ones I want enabled.

Thanks again.

I see you're sporting the 323i. In response to your question about mirrors tilting down when in reverse, you can do this yourself. IF, and I stress the word IF, you're '00 model yr car was made past Sept., you will have a Laser Cut Key. They implemented a few standard features post Sept. For your mirror to tilt down, have the mirror control to the Driver Side, and when u put it in reverse, it will tilt. I don't have the print-out in front of me, but i know some of the other features went on to include: Memory seating feature to include mirror settings as well, standard safety seat anchors in the rear, redesigned center console (not exactly sure which buttons they mean by this), the radio to include a time function, thus being able to display time on the radio, and other functions on your OBC display readout on the dash. I believe there were a few others, but to me, the laser cut key and the mirrors were a biggy. If you have the laser cut key, you have your mirror tilt. If not, you're s.o.l. Good luck (hope that wasn't too confusing)
