Today at a red light a nice 2002-2003?? 525i or 530i (most likely) with bright Xenon lights decided to pull to my right while im in the left lane I assume to pull ahead of me (double parked car 3 blocks away) which means he would need to punch it and race me. I normally look up to BMW's (Allow them to pull out when the others in front dont, and let them get in front on lane changes) but for some reason this guy was changing his shirt or dressing in his car and I acting on impulse tipped the car into sport mode and as its about to change he inches forward a bit as do I. Then on green i floor it and the auto shifts at near 6500rpm, and im assuming he floored it as well and Id say that 1/3 of his car was in front of mine but here the double parked van comes into play, and at around 55 he brakes hard to get behind me to avoid hitting the van and i somewhat went on mine thinking he was gonna get in front of me (he gained the lead because i eased off the gas around 45) but then continued on with him behind me driving in an upset/aggressive manner trying and failing (due to my effort) several times to find a way through the traffic ahead of me only to turn up a side street a few blocks later. So anyway I somehow feel I wronged the BMW driver, and probably made him think his car is slow, especially since im an auto 325i... [paranoid]

On the side not is taking the engine to 6450 rpm bad?

I wouldn't worry about it - the guy sounds like a turkey!

Revving to the redline isn't a problem. The engine and drive train are designed to handle it, so don't worry about that either.

I wouldn't worry about it. Taking your car to redline is not a problem, as long as the car upshifts and doesn't stay there. I punch my car to redline almost every day...it's perfectly fine. Car companies know people will probably take their cars to its limits (and BMW drivers MUCH more often) so they make it "safe" to flex the cars' muscles.
As for the 5-series driver, I wouldn't worry about him. It wasn't his place to go around traffic and try to cut in front of you...I see people try to do that to me all the time (especially in NYC) but I never let them get in front of me. I just punch it when the light turns green and usually they don't even challenge me, and if they do, they always get raped. I think the 5-series driver should have backed off as soon as he saw you jump off the line with him...he shouldn't have tried to keep going, he risked ending up in the van.

Your feeling guilty? [scratch] Some people would call this a "kill" and brag about it. No way you should feel guilty. He tried to beat you and lost. Thats just the way it goes. [thumb]

But it was a BMW, If it were anything else I would be dancing and bragging.... All BMW drivers are one big family, we need some BMW pride.... But I do question why someone with the 184hp engine in a 525i would wanna race I think its a little underpowered 0-60 auto in what 8.5? Or maybe it was a 530i

I understand what you're saying about being extra polite to other BMW drivers, like letting them in when they're in the wrong lane and etc. but just like my deal on Sunday with the 3'er, he asked for it, I offered it, either way the race is on, just like your 5'er.....all is fair when the light turns green.........actually I try to be polite to all drivers, so that neither of us take a risk that can result in damage.......

Well there was one occasion when a 330ci jet black too[;)] I was admiring the car on the highway and the guy turns on his wipers (splashes me)... and then hits the gas.... and I followed him to 125 I could keep up with him but he clearly had the edge... so eventually as traffic came and went I finally got an open road and I floored it as he was up ahead and I passed him at maybe 130 and went on to a 134 or 35 I stopped looking since a curve came up ( I will say at those speeds its a whole new car) then I became cop conscious and let the speed bleed off as the toll came up. After that my exit was up and sure enough I can see the black 330ci coming on the left lane real fast up from the mirror I guess he wanted payback so to deny him the pleasure I switched from the middle to the the right lane and Im assuming he wizzed by at 100...

I was wondering If i had floored it when I saw him coming up in that he was about 1/4 mile away would he have won?? And whats with the 128mph limiter? From my experience it doesnt exist or maybe im an exception....[burnout]

Dood.. do not feel guilty.. It can bug me when people try to pull that.. (Theres a similiar street like the one you described, in downtown Atlanta..). I figure most of the time it's a suburbanite who doesn't know **** about the downtown streets, unless they come rocketing up to the red light.. When that happens it's your lead foot to theirs man.. It's like smart ass kids skipping in the lunch line (among other things). Time to smack 'em back in line!

That said, drive safe and without emotion as best you can. Drive SMART and you can still haul butt and enjoy your ride.

Don't feel guilty. Too many pricks buying BMWs for the status to be one big happy family. You know the stereotype people have of BMW drivers. It's getting harder and harder to find an enthusiast now.

I bet it's those kind of people who abuse their cars and pass the problems on to the proud unsuspecting buyers.

"feeling guilty."

[wave]

Don't feel guilty. The other driver was an [shake] -hole...

He should have given [you], a fellow BMW owner, a little respect and caught your eye and

pointed or somehow indicate that he would like to get ahead of you at the change to green.

Maybe next time he'll show a little more courtesy.[thumb]

New to the BMW World--getting mine this year. Is there an unwritten code of respect between you fellow Bimmer owners? I'm buying one because I love the car (engine and handling, etc.), not for the prestige or nameplate as some suggest. Sounds like there are some snooty Bimmer owners out there. Why don't they get a Benz instead?

I would've taken him, but that's just me ;-.)

I did take him and it can easily be argued that I won, as for an unwritten code of conduct, i doubt it, like someone here said too many status symbol buyers for us to be one happy family.

I agree with all of you guys and I think you did the right thing. I see many people driving bimmers just because of the blades in the sky and I don't like that too much. Those guys make me uncomfortable saying I have a BMW when people ask what I drive, because I'm a little too young to drive a bimmer people usually think that I am one of those pricks that I certainly am not. Also when people don't give you the respect you deserve they are just asking for it. Like the other day when I was driving behing this brand new Jaguar that was going a little slow, at the green light I decide to floor it and as soon as I pull a few feet I hear tires screetching and the Jag just flyes by me. Turns out it was an XJR. I got what I asked for because I didn't pay attention, I understood my mistake and wasn't mad at the guy at all, I just felt like giving him the thumbs up for having such a great car. You did the right thing at least that's what I would have done in youre place.
