Front Windshield on Convertible

Alright... I've been fuming all day over something that happened to me on my commute to work this morning. I was driving along with the top down -- weather has been spectacular here in the San Francisco Bay Area -- then a truck kicked up a rock and it slammed into my windshield. At first I didn't think it did any damage, but when I got to work I noticed a crack about two inches long running vertically just to the left of the rearview mirror! During my drive home from work, it actually grew. It's now about six inches long.

So, my question: is this repairable? If not, have any of you convertible owners had your windshields replaced? What's it going to cost me? I heard someplace that the windshield is actually glued to the A-pillar, so it has to be removed with a saw! I also heard that since the rain sensor, etc. are affixed to the windshield, the replacement is really expensive. Any guidance you guys can give a fellow 'vert owner, would be great.

Thanks!

Bryan

Ouch! Sorry to hear about your windshield [:(]

Did you call your insurance company and see if they cover auto glass? I know many insurance companies offer windshield coverage on some of their policies.

If you have full coverage it should cover it. I got a dinger last fall and my deductible covered it. You’re going to have to replace the whole shield unfortunately.

Hey Bry!! That really does suck...I am so sorry. I know exactly how you feel. A few years back I had had my C280 Benz 2 days when a truck kicked a rock up and cracked the window.

That was in 2000, and the windshied without the rain sensor was about $350.00. With the sesnor is was around $700.00. That was in 2000, and for a c-class.

Depending on your deductible, you should either make a claim, or just bite the bullet and pay for it yourself.

Again...sorry!!!!

It's probably not repairable since it's a crack, not a chip, and it's growing. Your insurance company should cover it minus your deductible. If by some miracle it is repairable, some insurance companies cover that for free because it's cheaper than a replacement for them. Mine does. (State Farm)

I have had cracks repaired, as well as chips, etc..........I'm not sure about San Francisco, but Houston has 100's of people willing to come to your work and fix it......it usually only takes about an hour and is around $65.00. I have had them fixed for as low as $20.00. Do you have these type of windshield repair businesses?

yes.....you probably should of fixed this today as by in the morning it may be longer......I dont see the need for a new windshield if it can be fixed reasonably because its bound to be hit again and again and again...............I guess that is why it is big business here in Houston because we have so many trucks...........

MyHarley & DM Longhorn... thanks for the tip. You guys are the best.

I called my insurance company and they dispatched a glass repair service to my office. They repaired my windshield while I was at work. And, the best part is they didn't charge me a thing. I can still see a slight hairline (like a faint scratch) on the glass where the repair was made, but that's not going to bother me -- certainly better than paying for replacement.
