I've just started noticing that when I start my car in the morning, the fuel gauge goes to full, then wanders around for a few minutes. Goes from full, to 3/4, almost to half, back to full. It eventually stops at the proper level. This only happens when cold. Is this normal for an e46?

No, not normal. Take it to the dealer and they'll replace the sensor under warranty.

Rrrrr...

Had that problem since day one. [rolleyes] Two different dealers have replaced four imaginary fuel sensors, even replaced my gauges on one visit - still no luck...

Okay...spoke to the service department. They tell me that the way the gas is refined in Canada and also some other types of gas in the US eat away at the sensors which cause this problem. Doesn't happen in Europe. They will take care of it under warranty.

Correction - on my last visit the dealer was able to fix it... Once I find the invoice receipt I'll post the work description (you may want to reference the descrition to your dealer).

ya ive heard stuff like that can be a gas thing... for example my parents drive a Benz and unless it has Shell brand Gasoline inside the tank, the gauge gets very messed up to the point where it will not be out of gas, the gauge wont say its out of gas but the out of gas light is on and the little warning sensor... theyve taken it to get fixed but its still messed up... the solution they use... only use shell... bummer... lol good thing my bimmer doesnt do that... hehe... good luck with your problem ... to all how havent gotten it fixed yet that is...

Thanks Jamie. That would be great to see. My car is going in tomorrow morning. By the way...we have the same car/yr/color!
Here you go, Richard. This is straight from the Work Description (from Autobahn Motors):

Customer states after filling fuel tank, fuel gauge takes a day or more to go to full.
Pass side tank sensor was faulty.
Tank was nearly full.
Pump gas out of tank, remove & install both fuel level sensors and test OHMS as per SIB 16-04-98.
Found Pass side sensor open circuit sometimes, replace Pass side fuel tank sensor/pump.

Parts:
#16-14-6-752-499 Suction unit
#16-12-1-180-240 Hose Clamp
#07-12-9-952-104 Clamp

Total Cost 0.00 (Warranty)

Hope it helps... [thumb]

Here's my work description:

Fuel gauge wanders from 1/2 to full for first few minutes when cold. Then seems to be fine.
Correction: Replace 2 fuel senders

Parts
16-14-6-752-499 Suction unit right
16-14-6-755-879 Sensor

Very similar to yours. I asked that if it is because of the fuel, will I be back in a few years with the same problem. Service manager thinks not because the new sensors seem to be okay. My car is CPO so I am good until 2007 for warranty.

I had my fuel gauges replaced in the M3 about 4 weeks ago. According to my service advisor, there are three know issues with all e46 cars...
1. Fuel Gauge, no reason was given why, just is a common problem. (Mine was replaced)
2. Window Regulators, supposedly there is/are a plastic part(s) on the window regulators that has a tendency to alter shape in the warmer climates. (My passenger door regulator was replaced)
3. Sunroof, "Just plain buggy!" (That's a quote from my service advisor, and one of the reasons I ordered my M3 without one.)
