So I'm heading back from NYC to Atlanta, and outside Harrisburg, PA my car starts to cough and hiccup. Eventually it just dies and I'm stuck on the side of the road. The highway partrol sends out a tow truck, and I ask him for gas, just in case.

The needle indicated I still had gas, but I figured it was the natural thing to check first before having it towed. Sure enough, even though the needle said I had about 1/6th of a tank left, I had none!!

Has anyone else had this happen to them? The indicator seems to be working fine now. It was 15 degrees when I left Greenwich, CT. Maybe it was in some frozen state?

It cost me $90 for a couple gallons of gas...ugggghhh. The most expensive gas known to man...and the wrong grade anyway! But at least it wasn't anything more serious.

I have had that happen to me with my X5 when it was fairly new.

My situation was I drove to the gas station and filled up. When I got back in and turned on the vehicle, the needle showed about a half tank even though I just filled up!!! I wasn't going very far and the next time I started it up, it was fine. It happened a few times after that but hasn't happened for two or more years since then. The vehicle went through a lot of reprogramming (keys and other things) around that time, so maybe that cleared it up.

EDIT: Check that.......my experience was somewhat opposite of yours. Mine showed less gas than I really had. Yours showed more gas than you really had. hmmmmmmmm.
