Hey everybody long time,

Well I've been driving my 325i for about a year and 3 months. Ive been using Sunoco Ultra 94 octane ...however the BMW service department informed me that I was not using the right gas all this time...that the lower grade gas is better for the car. What do you all think??
Thanks.

Try a 91 or 92 octane. If you get the same gas mileage, then that should be good enough. Our cars can adjust, but if there's no improvement on gas mileage, than you're pretty much just throwing money away (no other real harm). I wouldn't go lower than 91 octane though.

I don't get it. I can understand them saying that the 94 octane is unnecessary but why would lower octane be better? In NY I don't see 91 Octane which is recommended. It's either 89 or 93 so I usually go with the 93.

BMW suggests premium. I believe 91 is the lowest any place has rated premium. I wouldn't go lower than that. If the dealer still says to go lower, switch dealers immediately.

Yeah, some cars are weird with gas. For example, with American mini-vans (Ford, Chrysler, etc.), you are supposed to use regular, not Premium. We used to have a Chrysler Town & Country and we kept filling it up with Premium, but then it gave us some problem (I completely forgot the nature of the problem) but the dealership said it was because we were using Premium fuel and we are supposed to use Regular. The problem never came back for the rest of our ownership with the car....go figure.

Can't get 91 here either...only 93. Don't know why they 'recommend' using lower octone...L.I. isn't exactly high altitude.
