This weekend im going to look at a BMW 328i 5speed 50k miles on it, they want $17,000 for it. A little too high? Well i will always try the bargaining game, however I would like to know what i would be expecting for maintenance at this interval? Also can anyone whip up a cheat sheet i could bring to have known things i should check out before i purchase this car?

Ask if they have an extended warranty, $17k for a 2000 328i with 50k miles isn't too bad. Before you commit to buy, try running a carfax report and posting the results here so that we can give you further advice.

Here is a link to BMW's Maintenance Intervals.

Your next one should be at 60k miles, which will cost around $400 if performed at a dealer.

Timing chains don't need replacement. Only timing belts do, and the E46 engines don't have them. The only belt driven cams on BMW engines is the M20 engine. So that's one thing you can strike off the list of expenses! [thumb]

I've not heard of bushing problems... Try doing a search for it in the E46 forum.

Good luck

So Im pretty sure im either buying a 323i or a 328i, they both have all the same components minus the obvious engine difference. Point being, at a 50k mile mark what is actually known to break. Because this is going to be a private sale and not through a dealer, so no real warranty

50k range - things I'm aware of, and have experienced some of em:

Suspension (possibly - depends on previous drivers driving pattern, drive it hard or ask to be taken on a hard drive to see how it feels)
Brakes (If it hasn't been done yet, 50-60k is usually new pad/rotor time)
ATF Pump hoses. Known to leak, I sprung a leak few months ago, hose replaced.
Power window regulators - 4-5 years is when they start to fade. I've had one 'explode' in the door, and another headed to failure soon.
Camshaft sensors. Been told they tend to 'flip' after 5-6 years. I've had one go out - replaced.
Control Arm bushings - can begin to go bad anywhere from 30k-60k miles. UI'm in need of new bushings myself. Not very expensive, I suggest aftermarket bushings, the OEM ones are prone to failure, the aftermarket ones are prone to lasting.. [:)] You can go 'oem' aftermarket or 'racing' aftermarket, it's a 'ride' choice. (squeaky and tight, or silent and a little 'sloppy')

Around 60k is your I2 inspection, be ready for that in a few months after purchase.

That's my almost 2 year ownership experience. Basically not bad at all for a 4 year old car. Hope that helps ya out some.
