Aloha guys , 2 days after the purchase of my " fun " car ( aka 5- speed ) , the tach stopped working . I checked both fuses that say instruments and they look good . Numbers 10 & 12 on the fuse box . But i found a 30 amp fuse blown and replaced that but no dice, still broke . I remember reading the previous owners records , which the dealer kept, and she had problems with the tach and her clock being slow. Don't know if they're related in anyway . Do you guys run into this alot or what . Any help would be great . I only have 70k miles on this baby what should I expect ...

I have never had that problem. Double check your manual and be sure that all the fuses are the proper amps. I might even replace them all with new ones, as I have had fuses that were no good, yet looked good!

It's probably the solder joints on the circuit board in the gauge cluster. They are known to cause problems in the E30s. Next time it happens, hit the dash above the gauges - if it's the solder joints, alot of times, it will jostle the joints enough so that the gauge will start working again. If it gets really bad, you can take it apart and resolder the joints.

My tach has behaved the same way yours did a handful of times. Each time, if I hit the dash above the tach, it starts working again.
