Had an awesome track day

Wow, folks! What a great day we had yesterday at PIR!

It was a BMW DE, totally sold out, on a Wednesday! Most cars were Bimmers, which is excellent, as we often get a lot of other makes. There were a whole lot of E36's, regular and super modded. Our fellow Bimmerforums member was running his "TC-Klined" E36 M3. Boy, he was fast. I tried to keep up for a lap, but there is no way... [:D] Excellent setup!

He's buddy ran a RMS S/C-ed M3 with a roll cage. That car was shooting flames on downshifts. What a sight.

Our other member had his first outing in a E36 325i. The event was sold out, so he could barely get in. But then, there was no stopping him from having fun.

Being a first timer (and that his car is an auto), he managed to improve a lot and was pretty fast in his group. You should have seen him grinning.

The day went very well.

Advanced group was failry well balanced, with only one or two slow cars and a couple of very fast ones. Otherwise, cars were pretty well matched.

My new 245 VR's up front and "pulled" struts made a world of difference. The car stopped to understeer. In the first session, when cold, it was a bit tail-happy, turning to neutral when the weather warmed up. I could throw it into the corner and hit the gas way before the Apex and just power out of the turns.

An S4 was faster than me on the straights, but the corners were all mine. Same went for this Instructor-driven 993.

This was one the most fun "battles". He could easily pull away from me on the straights, but I edged close to him foot by foot in the "carousel" and turns 9-12. Fun!

But then, once you think you are pretty fast, a Z-06 or a my buddy's Elise 190 Sport blasts pass you like you were parked. I checked their lap times - low 1:30's....

I checked my times off the in-car video that I ran: about 1:37-1:38 consistently, with the most cars running in our group doing over 1:40. Once the fronts settle in a bit better, I'm hoping to slash another second or two off.

Axxis Ultimates never faded and stopped lap after lap every time. For tires, I started with 29psi cold front and 25psi rear and kept the same throughout the day.

The Schroth harness worked like a dream. I never had to hang on for "dear life" - just planted in the seat.

Can't wait for the September 23rd event.

what kinda suspension do you recommend for AutoXing i have a 1986 e30 325 and i really want to get into it.
Definitely get into this! Once you start, there is no stopping. It's addicting as hell. [thumb] [:D]

Do a first one bone stock. Learning is always best on a stock car, as the car will lose traction sooner and at lower speeds - better practice.

I would recommend you do a Koni adjustables (like SA's or even DA's) and H&R race (Eibach ERS) setup. Sway bars, strut braces (E30's are soft) and camber plates should also be on the list, but down the row when you get to drive the car a bit longer. Get to know your ablities and the car first, then go from there. You'll see for yourself what needs improvement. [:)]

Brakes, brakes and brakes. Skip the "swiss cheese" rotors and better get blanks. Some nice street/AutoX pads, like Axxis Ultimate or Hawk HP+ will work best. SS lines and Ate Superblue race fluid will finish up the package.

whoa nice write up.
but a quick question, why were your tire pressures so low?
what size wheel/tire are u using?
I run slicks, the Kumho Victoracers. Slicks always require really low pressures to run as the sidewalls are very stiff. I run 245/45/17 up front and 255/40/17 at the back.

Excellent write-up. [thumb]

I should (and still could) do something similar for my BMW DE at Blackhawk Farms, IL.

I need more brakes on the NSX. I ran Blackhawk with new stock pads and high-temp motul only. That track is very hard on the brakes. I think I'll have to buy a set for the track.

I would love a set of track rims/tires. Could have gotten a nice set used, but couldn't spare the $1500 and didn't want to carry it on the cards.

When I finally get my film developed (I know I need a digi) I will post some pics. (Thank God Walgreen's burns cds from 35mm!)

I have been preaching the DE gospel to these guys for months. I think they are starting to catch on. Autocross is great too.

I'll be at Road America October 4-5 with the badger bimmers ( www.badgerbimmers.org ).

Should be some insane machines there. Last year the Harrison Motorsports guys brought their Ferrari trailer with a 333 SP, F40, and F355.

Speaking of Road America, the Vintage Sports Car Driver's Association is having their Vintage event September 19-21. There will be track touring on Saturday and Sunday.

Lotus is the featured marque. [:D]

A-ha! There, we have more trackies here. [:D]

Lotus club closed their day to us this year, as they run a "Lotus only" event. Otherwise I would have run this weekend again. [:(]

I am hoping that by the Alfa club day, one guy will run his Enzo again. He aleady did a couple of times, but I wasn't there. I just saw the car on the lot, as they day was too crowded for him to run then. [?|]

My buddie used to have an NSX and was cooking bakes all the time. He went with the Brembo BBK and full-blown Cobalt race pads. Other than changing rotors and pads almost after each event, the car stopped on a dime lap after lap. He mentioned that NSX had that brake problem that needed attention.

I am hoping that as my skills increase I can save a little wear on the brakes. Blackhawk was new to me, so that was harder, but I still wasn't getting on them as strong and as briefly as I should.

I also hope some cooling upgrades will help. I don't need to drop the coin on a BBK, particularly when I'd have to buy new rims as well (my fronts barely clear the caliper; at least it looks pretty cool.)

I also think that I didn't have confidence in the stock pads. I didn't have a problem diving into the braking zones headfirst in my 325i with Mintex track pads.

And yes, it is good to have another person who can answer my questions in this area, instead of the other way around. Not that I mind giving advice . . .

Sounds good! Info sharing is the best way to get around. [thumb] [driving]
