Hello Friends,

Has anyone had any experience hardwiring a radar detector to their E46? I have a Passport 8500-X50, and I'd like to have it done or do it myself. As I've only had my baby less than 2 weeks, I'm a little nervous to DIY anything. Any help or comments are greatly appreciated.

It's mad easy. You can hard-wire it to your rear-view mirror (assuming you have HomeLinke) or even your sunroof motor/overhead light console. There are other ways to hard-wire it and each way is up to you. I have my Escort Passport 8500 X50 hard-wired to my rear-view mirror and I have the remote mute button mounted on the left of the shift knob. I took my car to a mobile audio/video guy for this clever setup that I wanted.

The install costed $50 from my local guy. Don't expect to pay much more than that, it's really not a hard job to do. Here are the pictures:

The first picture shows how the radar detector gets hard-wired into my rear-view mirror, and the second picture shows the remote mute button located on the left of the shift knob, close to where the driver's seat is.

What you want is the "Direct Wire SmartCord." It's basically the direct wire cord to hard-wire the 8500 X50 to your car, but it includes a remote mute button (attached to the Direct Wire cord). The little black button is the "mute" button that you just hit as soon as you get a false alarm and there are two small LED's there too if you can see them. One is green and stays illuminated while the 8500 X50 is on (when you turn the radar off, the green light turns off) and when the radar is detecting something, the red LED blinks. I don't need the little lights and I found them awfully bright for night time driving (my eyes are sensitive to that stuff) so I put a small strip of electrical tape over the two lights, but that is not shown in the picture.
If you want a setup like this and you're kind of unsure of the setup, I highly recommend taking it to a mobile audio/video shop and have someone do it for you. This way you can just tell them where you want the radar detector on your windshield and where you want the remote mute button and they'll do a very clever installation for only around $50.
