Not having looked into this very much other than possibly doing a HID conversion, I'm wondering why converting to smilies is so expensive? What kind of bulbs do they use, what gets replaced in the conversion, what mods have to be done, etc.?

going new is expensive because they arent in the US. They have to be brought in, and that makes them rare. rare = expensive. They also use H1 bulbs, bright as hell.

I got Euro ellips and then put HID into them. if you have us ellips and dont care about the citylight or the look of the Euros I would get hid. This person is talking about going from selaed beam though.

This is what the smoked ones look like:

The hella conversion is just like the sealed beam except they use H4 and work much better, similar light pattern as the Euro ellips.

What are the highbeams? I like the look of those.

I found the US elipsoids not very good in my '89. At the very least change out the bulbs to Sylvania Silverstars (about $20 ea). Euros are better and smileys better yet, but it all depends on how much you want to spend and whether you can do it yourself.

I can not recommend NIki-place. THey have screwed people over before. Tried to screw me and I ended up screwing them back.

The highbeams I have art part of the Hella BLackline kit. The X is what makes them black but allows them to shine just as bright

One mod on US ellips is to modify the high beam to go in the low beam housing. http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Upgrade/More_light.htm I did this in my dasd 7, helped a little. I second the SIlverstars.

This Blackline Kit intrigues me, where can you find this?
