Headlight washers

Does anyone know how the headlight washers are supposed to work? I have a 2002 330i with headlight washers. The manual doesn't say anthing about how they are supposed to function. Do they come on automatically or after so many uses of the windshield washer? Any help will be appreciated.

They generally come on after about three or four uses of the windscreen washers.

Also, my recollection is that the headlights need to be on too.

Every fifth time, while the headlights are on.
