In older cars, the heating elements in the seat itself usually break. If you have basic electrical troubleshooting skills, here's what to do:

- under the seat there is are two plugs. Check to see that they are firmly connected.
- If you have an electrical meter, set it to read DC voltage and unplug the connectors to see if you have voltage on the car side of the wiring. If not, check fuses and wiring. If you have voltage, the seat elements are probably bad.
- Switch the meter to measure resistance and measure the resistance of each connector on the seat wiring. If you high/infinite resistance the elements are bad.

You can rebuild them yourself, parts are available from BMW, but you have to completely remove the seat cover.
