I'm considering upgrading my 99 E36 convertible to an 2001 E46, 6 speed convertible. I test drove one last week and I experienced a high pitched 'tinny' noise almost like a high pitched rattle coming from what sounded like the rear exhaust system. I drove the car at a BMW dealership and then went and talked to a small BMW specialty shop dealer and they told me this is normal on high RPMs for model years 01 and 02 but not as bad in 03 and 04. I was very surprised and disappointed.
Can anyone confirm this is normal? If it is, does anyone know of an after market exhaust system that will eliminate this but wont be too loud?
I dont experience anything like this in my E36 and I will be runing the car hard fairly regulary and was very annoyed by this sound.
